This is Fish Radio. I’m Laine Welch – A big line up of fish meetings this week. You can tune in from home. More after this –

Know what the second leading cause of death is among commercial fisherman? Falling overboard. Know what would have saved many of them? Personal Flotation Devices. Today’s PFDs are built to be comfortable, stay out of your way and keep you from drowning. Find the right PFD for you at www.livetobesalty.org

It’s the time of year when fishery meetings kick into high gear with five set for this week alone.

Starting tomorrow through Wednesday (Dec. 2-3) the industry will get a first glimpse of possible halibut catches for next year. The International Pacific Halibut Commission is holding its interim meeting in Seattle. Only two regulation changes are being proposed by fishermen– one would set a maximum size limit for commercial and sport users; another suggests requiring retention of first fish caught of 29 inches or less. The IPHC meetings are available on the web.

Tomorrow and Wednesday also features the Ocean Acidification in Alaska workshop at the Anchorage Marriott.

Molly McCammon is director of the Alaska Ocean Observing System, host of the event. State funding for the ocean research and monitoring ends next June and national funding is mostly going elsewhere.

We’re looking at how do we keep state program going, where are the gaps in the program, how can we get additional funding and partners, and how do we keep this issue at the forefront of the public and legislator’s mind.

Satellite listening stations for the workshop are available around the state.

Changes to the observer program for small vessels is the focus of meetings set for Tuesday, Dec. 2 in Kodiak and Dec. 4 at Homer. NOAA outreachers will hold similar observer update meetings in March at Sitka and Petersburg.

The state Board of Fisheries gets back to business December 3-8 in Cordova. Prince William Sound and Upper Copper River/Upper Susitna River finfish are the focus of the meetings. The Fish Board also will review 57 proposals from region stakeholders. You can listen live to all the meetings.

Finally, setting next year’s catches and issues surrounding pollock, cod and other groundfish will take center stage at the North Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting set for Dec 8-16 at the Anchorage Hilton. The Council meetings also are streamed live on the web.
