October 6th is the entry deadline for Alaska’s biggest seafood competition. The Alaska Fisheries Development Foundations 25th annual Symphony of Seafood event highlights new and innovative seafood products year after year. The call for products ranges from smoked fish, seafood baby bisque and burgers to salmon enriched skin cream. With the four categories, Retail, Food Service, Beyond the Plate and Beyond the Egg; the seafood product possibilities are endless.
“For example some of the different products that have been entered in the past for the Beyond the Plate category… We have had oils, we have had specialty pet food treats, jewelry and salmon leather products, and fish bone broth. So it is very wide open and your imagination is the only limiting factor.”
Julie Decker is the Executive Director of AFDF and host of the Symphony.
“When it just covered the Retail and Food Service categories, there was a smaller section of the industry that could enter a product; now with the Beyond the Plate and Beyond the Egg categories it has opened up to a lot larger number of companies. So it is important to emphasize that, companies that are making products out of Alaska seafood, all of those companies are eligible to apply. It just has to be a product made out of Alaska seafood and commercial ready.”
The categories remain the same, but the dates have changed.
“We heard from a number of companies that the time line was a bit late for preparing new products and looking forward to national and international competitions. So we decided to move up the timeline.”
The judging will now occur at Pacific Marine Expo in Seattle in mid-November.
For a couple reasons – it will give winners more time to plan their travel and to enter the products in the Seafood Expo North America contest in Boston in March.
AFDF is celebrating their anniversary with a special Hall of Fame.
“I think it will be a really interesting opportunity for everyone to see trends over time in product development and some of the winners I think people will recognize as common, everyday products that were actually Symphony winners many years ago. So I think it will be a really fun way to encapsulate what 25 years have meant to the industry.”
In the traditional Symphony of Seafood fashion, they will host two People’s Choice Award ceremonies and soiree’s in Seattle and Juneau. The call for products entry deadline is October 6. Get more info at the AFDF website and find links at www.alaskafishradio.com
